John “Broph” Brophy passed away on February 4, 2024 at home after a long illness. He was 71.  Born in Philadelphia, son of the late William Brophy and Theresa Sams, he was raised in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, and has most recently resided in Croydon, PA.  Broph was a proud graduate of Northeast Catholic High, Class of 1970, where he developed many lifelong friendships.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona (nee Stahl), his daughter, Brianna Howley (Luke), and his granddaughter and “best girl”, Grace, as well as his sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.  He is also predeceased by his sister, Carol Bach, and his step-father, Richard Sams.

Broph was a huge fan of Philadelphia sports and could often be found outside in the summer listening to a Phillies game on the radio doing a crossword puzzle. He enjoyed many summers at the Jersey shore with his friends and family.

My childhood summer breaks would be spent in Philadelphia with my brothers and parents at Grandma's, Pop-Pop's and Uncle John's home on Passmore street in Philadelphia. Uncle John would give up his room for my parents and the rest of the kids would sleep in the office, downstairs...wherever there was a bed. Uncle John was awesome, he would come home with soft pretzels for us after his shift at Taylor key, but my fondest memory was him taking Jason, Bill, and myself fishing for my very first time. I didn't even know how to cast a line. He worked with all of us to bait the hook, show us how to cast, and reel em in! My very first cast after my lesson led me to catching a duck....I was so scared I didn't know what to do and just started freaking out. Uncle John yelling "how the hell did you catch a duck??" all while he was laughing at the top of his lungs. It is one of my fondest memories of those many summers we spent in Philadelphia. Uncle John was that cool uncle the brothers all looked forward to seeing and hanging out with even though we were so young back then, he always spent time with us. The loss of a father, uncle, dad, friend is never easy and I hope he finds peace in heaven with all of loved ones who have crossed the bar from us. Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. Uncle John was truly a remarkable person and his presence will be sorely missed.
