Edgar Wayne Hippo

November 2, 1938 - December 4, 2024

Edgar Wayne Hippo passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at his home, in the care of his nephew, Edward Wayne Hippo and his wife, Cheri A. Hippo (nee Berry). He was 86 years old. Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Edgar W., Sr. and Margaret Hippo. He moved to Morrisville in 1955, then resided in Levittown with his first wife, Nancy, for 33 years. In 2001, he married his childhood sweetheart, Barbara Ann Gerdy (nee Toadvine) and was a Hulmeville resident for the past 16 years. Mr. Hippo served in the military for 6.5 years: 2.5 years with the U.S. Marines Corp, followed by 4 years with the U.S. Air Force, during which time he did tours in the Azores Islands and Kevlavic, Iceland.  He was Honorably Discharged in 1962.  He spent his career in the Newspaper Industry, first as an Assistant Circulation Director at the Trentonian from 1965-1980 and then as the Circulation Director for the Trenton Times from 1981 until his retirement in 2002.

Mr. Hippo was an avid bowler, and in his early years, bowled in 8 ABC-sanctioned leagues per week without ever missing a match. He was a member of the Dick Oliver Squad that went to Chicago for many years to bowl in the famous Peterson Classic. His other joys included spending time at his summer home in North Carolina, where he enjoyed fishing the Albemarle Sound and Scuppernong River.  He also enjoyed deep sea fishing on the Geronimo out of Forked River, New Jersey. He enjoyed auctions and going to yard sales on Saturday mornings with his wife, Barbara, and best buddy, Mike. Edgar was proud of his collection of over 400 hippos. Mr. Hippo was a member of the Elks Lodge Fairless Hills No. 2023, American Legion Post 40 Edenton, NC, and the Knights of Columbus Levittown, and served on the Board of Directors of the Interstate Circulation Managers from 1994-1998.

Edgar was predeceased by his first wife Nancy Hippo, and his infant son, Christian Wayne Hippo, his second wife, Barbara Hippo, and his sisters, Donna Meschke and Rose Howland. He is survived by one brother, David J. Hippo, one sister, Karen Bonk, his stepsons, Michael and John Gerdy, their wives and children, and his many beloved nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, from 9-11:00am at the Wade Funeral Home, 1002 Radcliffe Street, Bristol Borough. His Funeral Mass will follow at 12 noon at Our Lady of Grace Church, Penndel. Michael Gerdy shared a condolence

My family and I will deeply miss Ed, or Pop Pop as his grandkids and great grandkids affectionately called him. He was loyal, funny, generous, and simply a joy to be around. He re-entered our lives at the perfect moment, rekindling an old flame with my mother and making the last eight years of her life the happiest she ever experienced. Thank you, Ed, for being a part of the Gerdy family and helping us make memories we otherwise would not have had. We will certainly pray for your journey to heaven, where your friends and loved ones are undoubtedly waiting for you. I am also grateful to Cheri, Ed, and Theresa for providing the care he needed in his final months.

With love,
Michael, Karen, Bryan, Kaitlyn, Nylah, and Fynn

Kathy Meschke shared a photo and condolence

Sonny's older sister Donna (Ron) Meschke was my Mom. She had 4 children and Sonny was great to all of us. This picture was taken by the realtors who help him sell his home in NC. He invited me to visit him to see it before he no longer owned it. We had a very special 4 days together. I can see why Nancy and Barb both loved it and why my cousin Suzanne chose to marry Vito there. He was a funny, special man.
