Agnes M. Tobar (McGarvey)
Agnes M. Tobar (McGarvey) came into this life on August 17, 1930 and peacefully left on February 6, 2021, just 25 days after the passing of her husband and love of her life.
Born in the Southwest section of Philadelphia to the late John and Margaret McGarvey, she was a loving and devoted wife of the late of John P. Tobar for 69 years. Agnes was preceded in death by her brother, Captain John (Jack) McGarvey, her sisters Margaret McGarvey, Mary Weidman, Nancy O’Donnell, Johanna Mangano, Delores Norman, and Patricia DellaVecchio, and her grandsons, James V. Siesser, Jr. and David J. Field.
Loving mother of 6 children: Agnes Richards (Michael), Veronica - Rocky, Nicholas (Luray), Theresa, John, Jr. (Sandy) and Tina Valeri. Proud and loving grandmother of 12 grandchildren: Jessica Phinn (Todd), Tennille Richards, Gina Haegele (Adam), Nicole Davis (Glenn), Nicholas Tobar, Ashley Sunshine (Brad), Brittney Rowlands, Dylan Valeri, Haley Weiner and Blaise Wertz. Great-grandmother of 13: Todd, Jr., Luke, Jason, Payton, Indigo, Ella, Jax, Carter, Astyn, Kaylin, Jared, Callie and Griffin. She will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
She was a 1946 graduate of Saint Monica’s School of Business, Philadelphia. Agnes entered the workforce full time at just 16 years of age. She was a dedicated employee at the Philco and Breyers Companies of Philadelphia. She married in 1952 and spent many years at home as a wife and mother. She re-entered the work force in 1972 as a Keypunch Operator for Pirolli Fuel in Tullytown. She finished her work career with a 20 year tenure with Modern Handling and Equipment Rental, Levittown.
Agnes was strong, proud and loved her Philadelphia sports teams. In her day, she was an accomplished bowler and loved trips to the casinos. She loved to dance to Big Band music, and was the first one on the floor for a Mummer’s Strut. Her and husband John, could cut a rug as well as Ginger Rogers & Fred Astaire. They shared a love affair like no other, spending everyday of their retired life side by side. Even after being deemed legally blind, she never faltered to tending to her husband, the love of her life.
