Mary Joe Dupree

Mary Joe Dupree(twin sister of Martha Joe Nelson) was born to the late Aaron and Mariah Joe on May 16, 1915 in Darlington, S.C. Mary was a few minutes older than Martha and was one of 17 children. Mary was educated in the public school system in Darlington county. At the age of 12 she began working alongside her older siblings picking cotton, cropping tobacco and many other farm related chores. She met and later married Samuel Holloway Dupree on November 3rd, 1934 and in 1935 Jessie Mae Dupree was born to that union. One day when Jessie Mae was just an infant the house that they lived in- in Darlington S.C. caught on fire, Mary bravely went through the fire and pulled Jessie Mae from the blazing inferno before the house completely burned down.

In 1942 she and her family moved to Philadelphia, PA. Mary was employed by S&S Hat Company as a lady’s straw hat operator. Many of the plumed hats that she helped to make were often styled by her in church. In 1949 they purchased their home in Philadelphia on 1919 West Poplar Street, a place that everyone had come to know and love .She lived on Poplar street for 63 years before deciding to sell her home in 2012. Mary loved sewing and chewing Wrigley’s Double mint chewing gum which she enjoyed daily until the Lord called her home.

In 1954 Mary visited Gethsemane Apostolic Church, in Darlington S.C. During her visit she was baptized in Jesus’ name by Bishop L.E.Swaringer which resulted in receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. Returning to Philadelphia she joined Shiloh Apostolic Church of Philadelphia, PA.- Bishop Robert O Doub Jr., who licensed her to be missionary. Over the years she faithfully served Evening Light Apostolic Church-Bishop Alton Pettus,Highway Christian Church-Bishop Spencer Davis and then in 1979 returned to Evening Light Apostolic Church-Bishop Preston Backus and Pastor Ernest Hand where she is currently a member.

Due to complications Mary and Samuel could not have any more children, but always wanted a son and an heir. Mary asked her younger sister and her husband Pastor Roceda Hines and Willie Hines (who eventually had 15 children) if she could have one of their sons. On September 17, 1964 Elijah Hines was born and given to Samuel and Mary as a token of love between two sisters. Elijah was legally adopted by Samuel and Mary-bearing the name Elijah Hines Dupree.
