Charles W. Messinger
Charles (Opie) W. Messsinger died suddenly on March 21, 2016 at Robert Wood Johnson Memorial Hospital. He was 59.
Born in Abington, he was the son of the late Walter and Elizabeth Messinger and brother of the late William Messinger.
Charles inherited his musical talent from his parents who were professional musicians. At the age of 9, he taught himself the guitar and at 14, he formed his own rock band. Music was a life-long passion; he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Temple University and was completing his Masters in jazz research at Rutgers University.
A skilled guitarist, he played all styles of music and performed onstage at the National Flat-Pick Guitar Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival. He also played with several bands: Front Street, Confession, Free Shrimp, and Bear’s Choice. He especially enjoyed playing music with his children; Zachary on guitar, Sage on violin, and Skye on flute. He also performed at Bensalem Presbyterian Church with his soul mate, Sharon.
In his youth, as a “free spirit”, he lived in Nova Scotia with his brother Frank and long-time friend, Chuck. A naturalist at heart, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, biking, birding, and hiking. He was a gentle “giant” to all creatures great and small including his shepherd, Gigi. He was an avid Philadelphia sports enthusiast who enjoyed going to Phillies games with his son, Zac. He was proud of Sage’s soccer prowess and Skye’s basketball and Girl Scouts activities.
Charles was a “life-line” to many people with his insatiable thirst for knowledge and ability to communicate with his vibrant personality.
He was employed as a web designer and representative for The Tile Store in Fairfield, New Jersey.
Charles is survived by his brothers Frank (Suzie) and John, sisters Linda Demidio (Joseph) and Alicia, and his fiancée, Sharon Steward. He will be dearly missed by his children Zachary (Meghan, who is expecting a child in September), Sage and Skye Scarlett (Kelli) and step-children Christopher Wainwright (Laura) and Jessica Wainwright( Catherine Messinger.) His many nieces and nephews were a joy to his life as were his friends whom he loved in the “Opie” style.
